Dr. Wettstein is a urologic oncologist and clinical epidemiologist who joined the Northern Ontario School of Medicine and Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre in 2025. He completed his medical degree and residency in urologic surgery in Switzerland (Zurich and Basel).
Following residency, Dr. Wettstein worked as a staff surgeon in Thun before completing a formal fellowship in urologic oncology through the Society of Urologic Oncology–accredited program at the University of Toronto, with clinical training at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Toronto General Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
He provides comprehensive urologic oncology care, offering both open and minimally invasive (robot-assisted) surgical approaches. He is committed to delivering individualized, compassionate and evidence-based care, with a strong emphasis on using the least invasive treatment modality appropriate for each patient.
Dr. Wettstein holds a PhD in Clinical Epidemiology and Health Care Research from the University of Toronto and serves as an assistant professor at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. His clinical research, focused primarily on bladder and prostate cancer, is supported by numerous grants. He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications, presented at leading international conferences and received multiple academic awards, including the René Küss Prize and the BJUI Americas Prize.
He is a member of the Society of Urologic Oncology and the Canadian Urological Association, serves as a reviewer for leading journals including European Urology and The Journal of Urology and has been active in clinical education in both Canada and Switzerland. Most recently, he was awarded the MD Program Teaching Award of Excellence by the University of Toronto.
