Oral Medications for ED

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common condition that affects many men. Oral medications are a safe and effective treatment option. These medications work by increasing blood flow to the penis, helping to achieve and maintain an erection when sexually stimulated.

1. Sildenafil (Viagra®)

  • Takes effect in 30–60 minutes
  • Best taken on an empty stomach
  • Lasts 4–6 hours
  • Avoid with heavy meals or excessive alcohol

2. Tadalafil (Cialis®)

  • Takes effect in 30–60 minutes
  • Can be taken with or without food
  • Lasts up to 36 hours ("The weekend pill")
  • Available in daily low-dose form for continuous effect

How to Take ED Medications

✔ Take the medication before planned sexual activity (time varies by drug).
✔ Sexual stimulation is still required for the medication to work.
✔ Do not take more than one dose in a 24-hour period (except for daily tadalafil).
✔ Avoid excessive alcohol as it may reduce effectiveness and increase side effects.

Possible Side Effects

Most men tolerate ED medications well, but some may experience:

  • Headache
  • Flushing (warmth, redness in the face)
  • Nasal congestion
  • Upset stomach or indigestion
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Muscle or back pain (more common with tadalafil)
  • Blurred vision or changes in color perception (rare)

Who Should Avoid ED Medications?

These medications are not safe for everyone. Avoid them if you:

  • Take nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin) for heart disease
  • Have severe heart disease or recent stroke/heart attack
  • Have uncontrolled high or low blood pressure
  • Have severe liver or kidney disease

When to Seek Medical Help?

*** Go to the ER if you experience:

  • A painful or prolonged erection lasting more than 4 hours (priapism)
  • Severe chest pain or fainting after taking the medication
  • Sudden vision or hearing loss
